Mexico to Belize, via the Chicken Bus

Tulum to Caye Caulker route

Waving adios to Mexico we had a long trek, including a chicken bus, to reach our first destination in Belize, it was a day of about 8-9 hours travel involving land and sea.

The journey started from Tulum bus stop, a short walk from our hotel. Do not mistake the term hotel with pictures you might see from friends who have been to Tulum or you have Googled. It was very basic, and except for an upside down dead cockroach next to the bed and a family of ants on the doorstep, clean. I was happy to leave.

Mayans in Mexico

Chichen Itza, one of the modern seven wonders of he world

¡Bienvenidos a México! Welcome to Mexico!

A few months ago I totted up my remaining vacation days for the year and found myself booking a trip to Central America. When on the Everest Base Camp hike a couple of years past we saw plenty of Intrepid groups so looking for a similar experience I ventured to their website. It was here I unearthed the Mayan Adventure which perfectly exhausted my remaining days (but luckily not me).

The trip would encompass three countries: Mexico, Belize and Guatemala, and as the name suggests, following the path of the Mayans.

Cartagena: The Great Escape

  1. Cerveza in Cartagena
  2. Cartagena: The Great Escape

All-inclusive beach resort or cultural city (with beach)? Danielle vs Sam. We wanted a mini New York getaway in the fall however the idea of what that getaway would be was less simple to decide. At somepoint the suggestion of Cartagena was raised, of recent blogging distinction (apparently) and growing in popularity. It offered sun, islands with beaches, a walled city with lots of history and culture to see. It ticked all the boxes, especially once we added in a boutique hotel with swimming pool.

Beers of Colombia, three of the BBC beers
Selection of Bogota Beer Company brews

Whenever I travel I try to taste the local brew and visiting breweries has almost become a go-to activity on travel. Had we been in Bogota when I discovered these Colombian beers from BBC (Bogota Beer Company), that would almost certainly have been added to the itinerary. As it was, a trip to Bogota was out of the question on this occasion, the beer was widely enough available though that I could get through most of the different brews during our time in Cartagena.

A bit of sun and history in the South

I got my first taste of the ‘south’ with my trip to Austin last fall, with Australia, England and Dublin coming after that, President’s Day in February presented the next great ‘excuse’ to explore more of it. While New York was freezing its ass off,  South Carolina should be a good few degrees warmer even in the winter and perfect for a three day weekend in Charleston.

Having left it a little late to book, direct flights to Charleston SC were a tad on the extortionate side (ranking just below brokers who try to charge a fee on non-fee apartments). So..we had to get a bit creative with our travel.

A Sampling of Sydney – Art, Beaches, Caves…Waterfalls

Sydney Opera House lit up at night

Sydney Opera House at night

I started a travel writing course late last year, one of the first assignments was to identify some potential ‘hooks’. Hooks are stories, events, key dates – something you can hang a story on to increase its relevance at the time of publishing. As I was scratching my head for some hooks I was also planning the trip to Australia.

While Melbourne became the main destination, Sydney had always captured my imagination and particularly Sydney’s Opera House. Thinking back as to why, firstly I remember watching NYE celebrations on the TV, Sydney always being one of the first countries to ring in the new year and so seeing all the fireworks go off with the Opera House in the foreground. Always leading the celebrations and a distinctive setting. Then, secondly, that distinctive setting, distinctive design, more so than a tower, a clock or a bridge and an existing part of the landscape – unlike a ball.

The Grand Tours

Torquay Beach

Torquay Beach

Torquay, some may recognize the name as a seaside town in Devon, England. It also happens to be the name of a small town near Melbourne, population of only 10,000 with significant surfing heritage. Two of the biggest surfwear companies RipCurl and Quicksilver were both founded in the town.

On this occasion, as we got out of the van and climbed over the ridge to face the sea, we were not here to surf. Torquay is also known as the Gateway to the Great Ocean Road and this was the order of the day. Indeed, we were not carrying surfboards but rather a cup of tea, as we made the first stop for morning tea and cake. I had joined a tour run by a local company “Go West”, we were going to travel the Great Ocean Road making several stops along the way and then returning express in the evening.

The Aussie Tour: Starting With Art

“You’re from Australia?”, the question from the cashier in the bank was perhaps understandable, I was after all talking about a trip to Australia and trying to exchange some US dollars to Aussie currency. It’s actually a surprisingly common question. Apparently the Australian and British accents have very subtle differences to the American ear. Unfortunately for the cashier the answer wasn’t so simple, “Nah, I’m British, living here, travelling there (Australia)”, “Oh!” was the slightly embarrassed reply.

Munich – McCarthy and Castles

Neuschwanstein CastleWe arrived in Munich just the day after some explosions hit a bus carrying the Dortmund football team, potentially due to that when we arrived at the airport just as we entering the main area of the airport I was stopped by two undercover officers, who had several questions for me (not Danielle though!), thankfully my answers didn’t raise any issues and I was allowed through!

One of the reasons for choosing Munich was the proximity to the Neuschwanstein Castle. Like Amsterdam, Instagram had provided some of the inspiration, while a mate – Rich, who had completed a European tour of castles before now provided further recommendation.

I Amsterdam sign

I Amsterdam Sign besides the Rijksmuseum

It feels a lot longer ago but back in April Danielle and I took a Euro trip to Amsterdam, Munich and Salzburg. Our plan was to pack light enough to rely on carry-ons, a plan proposed by the shoe addict. The only carry-on suitcase I had wasn’t going to be enough so I had acquired a new suitcase after some careful searching on the maximum dimensions for carry on. Sorted.
